Bathinda (VJ Verma): AIIMS Bathinda created history in the region by performing the first ever kidney transplant on March 6, 2025. In this transplant, a mother saved the life of her 22-year-old son by donating her kidney. This step has come as a new hope for the patients suffering from kidney disease in the last stage of the disease in the region. AIIMS Chairman Prof. (Dr.) Anil Kumar Raghu Gupta and Technical Director Prof. This great achievement was achieved under the leadership of (Dr.) Meenu Singh. Dr. Gu Gupta said that India is now the world leader in solid organ transplants, but the transplant rate per 10 lakh people (0.65) is still lower than that of many high-income countries.

Prof. (Dr.) Meenu Singh said that the number of diabetic patients in India is the highest, which is becoming the cause of end-stage kidney diseases. In this regard, the start of transplant facility at AIIMS Bathinda will be a relief for those patients, who cannot afford the treatment due to high cost. He also said that the condition of both the donor and the recipient is good. AIIMS Medical Superintendent Prof. Rajiv Kumar Gupta said that AIIMS Bathinda is committed to providing high quality healthcare services at the lowest possible cost to the people. Dr. Kavalji Singh Kaura, Head of Urology and Kidney Transplantation Division, said that this initiative is a necessary step in the face of increasing cases of kidney diseases in the society.

He thanked the entire team and the administration for this achievement. Dr. Sauravna, Head of the Department of Nephrology, AIIMS, said that his department has successfully completed more than 5000 kidney transplants (including peritoneal dialysis) in the last 18 months. The cost of a kidney transplant at AIIMS Bathinda is less than Rs 2 lakh, which will make this service affordable for the common man. However, the Ayushman Bharat Yojana has not provided any coverage to the small transport buses in Punjab, which has become a hurdle for the needy.
